Hello friends! Inspiration has struck Kari and I again, so we are back once more with another edition of The Loyal Book-A-Thon! This time we took inspiration from everyone’s favourite time of year: back to school! (I will admit to a little bit of sarcasm there, especially in light of the current times but I digress!) Our next readathon will occur during the month of September and we really hope you’ll come along with us on this journey! 🙂
Ashley’s August TBR | ScallywagAThon – August 16-23
August is kind of a catch up reading month for me, because I brought home a whole bunch of books from my classroom and school library and only dipped into a couple during July. It meant that I have a whole bunch still left to read for August, so I never made a TBR post at the start of the month. However, I’ve since decided to participate in the ScallywagAThon, which is hosted by HardbackHoarder, Paper Faerie, and Read All the Books.
Book Review | Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron
**Disclaimer: I recieved a free advanced reader’s copy of Cinderella is Dead through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the publishers and to NetGalley for this opportunity.
Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron is a young adult fantasy novel that takes place in the same world as Cinderella, but 200 years after Cinderella died. It’s feminist and queer, and plays with that familiar story we all know. The book published on July 7th, 2020. I rated it three stars.
Misc Monday | August Anticipated Releases
There are a lot of good sounding books coming out in August. I can’t wait to check out all the books coming out, but I narrowed it down to four that I am most intrigued by. You’ll find them below the cut.
Ashley’s July Wrap Up
I have been loving my summer vacation. It’s really not the ideal kind of summer vacation obviously, but after this school year I really needed it. I have been thriving while hanging out at home and reading. I also adopted some cats. It’s been a really, really interesting month. Anyways, let’s just jump into my wrap up!
Book Review | #bestiemademe | The Sword and the Dagger by Robert Cochran
**Disclaimer: I received a free copy of The Sword and the Dagger by Robert Cochran from his publishers in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to them for this opportunity.
The Sword and the Dagger by Robert Cochran is a young adult historical fiction novel. It is a multi point of view novel set during the reign of Genghis Khan. Three very different characters are forced to come together on an unlikely mission. I rated it four stars on Goodreads.
Book Review | Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis
**Disclaimer: I received a free advanced reader’s copy of Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this opportunity.
Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis is a stand-alone novel. It’s classified as a young adult horror novel and deals with some rather sensitive topics, so readers beware. It’s about a girl named Lola who is learning more about her family history in a rather spooky small town. Harrow Lake, according to NetGalley, is set to be published on August 25th, 2020. I gave it five stars on Goodreads.
Book Review | Hamnet and Judith by Maggie O’Farrell
**Disclaimer: I received a free early access copy of Hamnet and Judith through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for this opportunity.
Hamnet and Judith by Maggie O’Farrell is a historical fiction novel that tells the story of William Shakespeare’s family around the time of the death of his son. However, it also goes over the past of the couple and the family. I gave the novel 5 stars on Goodreads. The novel publishes on July 21st, 2020.
Book Review | More Than Maybe by Erin Hahn
**Disclaimer: I received a free early advanced reader’s copy of More Than Maybe by Erin Hahn in exchange for a honest review through NetGalley. Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this opportunity.
More Than Maybe by Erin Hahn is a YA contemporary romance novel. It features a dual point of view with both of our main love interests, and takes place in Michigan. The novel features Hahn’s signature mix of music and romance, and was a sweet and fun read. I gave it 5 stars on GoodReads. It publishes on July 21st, 2020.
Shelfie Sunday | May’s OwlCrate
May’s OwlCrate was a box that I was eagerly anticipating. I definitely understand why it takes so long for the box to be sent out, and I don’t blame them for that, but I do wish it was still coming mid month. However, that didn’t change my enjoyment of the box. I’m overall quite happy with all the items that came in the box.
