Something about me is that I am an avid reader. That might seem somewhat obvious coming from someone who has a book blog, but it is really true. I read a lot. It’s my favourite form of self-care, and I just love escaping into a different world and getting away from real life for a bit. In order to be meaningful about my reading, I have decided to set some reading resolutions this year.
1. Read 10 books a month.
This is a goal I have set for myself for the past few years though I’m not sure I always put it onto my reading resolutions. I don’t like putting too much pressure on myself when it comes to my upper number of books that I read in a year, but I think that 10 books read in a month is a pretty doable goal for me, and reading 120 books in the year would be something that would make me proud. It’s not nearly the same as my record from 2023 of 283, but it’s still a highly respectable number.
2. Finish more series that I have started.
I am probably not the only one who starts series and then struggles to get back to them. I really want to try and do better this year and work to completing some of the many series that are on my shelves. I need to be less scared of series and reading past book one. I also need to justify my collection of all of the books in the series even if I have only read book one.
3. Read more than I haul.
They say that book reading and book collecting are two different hobbies. I have both. I want to do a better job at reading things off of my physical TBR and reading the books that fill up my shelves. I have been keeping track of the books that I own, and I want to bring that unread number down.
4. Read more “big” books.
The last few years I have found myself more focused on the number of books that I read and that has made it harder for me to want to read the big books that fill my shelves. They just look so big and daunting and they hurt my arms when I’m holding them. I want to be less scared of those big books and check more of them off my list.
5. Read more diversely.
I think it’s really important to read from different perspectives and worldviews, and so I want to make sure that I am reading books from authors of all kinds. I want to read from the perspective of BIPOC people and from LGBTQ+ people. Their stories are incredibly important.
6. Try to read every day.
I spend too much time on my phone sometimes like many of my students, so I really want to try to be more conscious of what I’m doing with my free time. Instead of aimlessly scrolling on TikTok, I could be reading books and meeting some of my other goals on this list.
7. Catch up on NetGalley.
I have a tendency to request all too many books off of NetGalley, and that has made my ratio on there not as ideal as I would like. I want to try to read more of the books that I have requested and to try and improve my ratio. The plus of this goal is that I will also have more fodder for the blog here.
8. Catch up on OwlCrate and Book of the Month.
I haven’t been subscribed to OwlCrate since 2022 but I still have quite the backlist of OwlCrate books that I should really try and catch up on. Since I have unsubscribed to OwlCrate, I have subscribed to Book of the Month, and so I need to make sure I’m reading those so they don’t pile up.
9. Watch book adaptations.
There are so many adaptations of fantastic books coming out lately. I want to try and watch more of them so I can see how they compare to the books.
