September wasn’t my best reading month because I headed back to work and that was an adjustment scheduling wise. I’ve been feeling a little bit slumpy as well and it’s been making me procrastinate on reading instead of really diving into books. Whenever I force myself to read, I do find that I really enjoy it though so that’s really good. Let’s dive into everything I hauled and read below.
The books I hauled in September were as follows:
- The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
- Never Saw You Coming by Erin Hahn
- A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee
- Crave by Tracy Wolff
- Crush by Tracy Wolff
- Covet by Tracy Wolff
- Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village by Maureen Johnson
- White Smoke by Tiffany D. Jackson
- Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer
- The Bronzed Beasts by Roshani Chokshi
- Five Dark Fates by Kendare Blake
- Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake
- Queens of Fennbirn by Kendare Blake
- One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake
The books I read in September will be listed below:
1. Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: eBook
Review: This was one of my eARCs from NetGalley, so a review will be up on the blog closer to its January publication date.
2. The Loop by Ben Oliver
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: Physical Copy
Review: This was a super gritty book. The dystopian origin story definitely really felt a little too real. However, it was super interesting to read about. I liked Luka as a character and I definitely felt intrigued by the world building. The characters felt realistic, and I appreciated how they interacted with each other. It was super fast paced as well, which I enjoy.
3. Keep This to Yourself by Tom Ryan
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: Audiobook
Review: This was an interesting thriller. I found the mystery of it really different from other books that I had read, and I liked reading about how the main character was trying to solve the mystery of his best friend’s death. It had some twists that it had me completely thrown by what had just happened. It really liked the relationship that the protagonist found with the cousin of one of the victims. It really made me happy for him to find someone that made him happy.
4. The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: Audiobook
Review: I had so much fun with this book. The story was really adorable and I felt like it had a really unique premise that I hadn’t really encountered before in a romance novel. I liked the dual storylines of the guy attempting to reconcile with his wife and also reading about the romance he was reading at the same time. Overall, it was a well developed story and totally enjoyable. I will definitely be continuing with the series.
5. This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: Physical Copy
Review: I read this on the recommendation of one of my student’s who said it was their favourite book. I really, really enjoyed it. It’s a very quiet story. Things happen and it’s not uneventful but it’s really well done. The art is absolutely beautiful and the story was very moving.
6. Anne Frank’s Diary (Graphic Novel) by Ari Folman
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: Physical Copy
Review: This was a lovely adaptation of Anne Frank’s Diary. I really appreciated the art style and the way that it translated the story in a more visual form. It had been awhile since I read it, and I really enjoyed reading the story again. It is easy to understand Anne’s story and the things she was going through from the teenage perspective, without even considering the greater perspective of the world she was living in. It’s a deeply moving story.
7. Bridge of Souls by Victoria Schwab
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: Audiobook
Review: I love reading about Cassidy’s adventures. This one was just as spooky as I expected it to be. She gets into an awful lot of hijinx. I like learning more about the world she exists in and the different lore about the spirits that she deals with. I find it quite interesting. It kept me on my toes.
8. Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village by Maureen Johnson
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: Physical Copy
Review: This isn’t your typical book and it’s not fully what I expected going into it. However, I still had a lot of fun reading it. Maureen Johnson has this sense of humour that I kind of love. It’s not typical but it’s really interesting to me. I appreciated her advice and will keep it in mind should I ever go to England and visit a quaint English village.
9. The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Rating: 5 Stars
Format: Physical Copy
Review: I’m honestly obsessed with this series. It hits all of these boxes for me and is just the perfect storm of a series. I like the puzzles and the intrigue and the twisty house. It’s super fun and super messy and I love everything about it. Avery is a great character. I can’t wait until the third book comes out so I can see how things play out.
10. Blankets by Craig Thompson
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: Physical Copy
Review: I’d heard a lot about this graphic novel, but I can’t say I really knew what it was about. I ended up enjoying it a fair bit. It was interesting to read about the author’s life and his journey. The art was really well done. It’s definitely worth checking out.
11. Scooby Doo, Volume 1 by Keith Giffen
Rating: 3 Stars
Format: Physical Copy
Review: I had fun reading this. The world of it is super duper weird, but it was really interesting nonetheless. I liked the more mature take on the Scooby gang. The sci-fi elements were definitely an interesting addition.
12. A Universe of Wishes by Various Authors
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: Audiobook
Review: I really enjoy short story collections, and this one was really well done. The stories were all really well written and I liked getting snippets from previous series that I have read. The worlds were all so different, and I just really enjoyed the stories.
13. Scooby Doo Apocalypse, Volume 2 by Keith Giffen
Rating: 3 Stars
Format: Physical Copy
Review: It was a good continuation of the series, but there were some weird elements introduced. I prefer when it’s focussed on just the gang.
14. Graceling (Graphic Novel) by Kristin Cashore (adapted by Gareth Hinds)
Rating: 4 Stars
Format: eBook
Review: There will be a full review of this up on the blog closer to it’s publication date.
15. The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
Rating: 5 Stars
Format: Physical Copy
Review: This was a reread. This book is definitely still one of my all time favourite books. I love the atmosphere that the author managed to build. I also love the story that she spun. It’s well written and beautiful.
16. Scooby Doo Apocalypse, Volume 3 by Keith Giffen
Rating: 3 Stars
Format: Physical Copy
Review: Again, this was an interesting continuation. I like the art and the story is interesting. There are still some weird elements that I don’t love.
That’s everything that I read this month. What did you read?
