Misc Monday | Six Month 28th Year Reading Update

06.01.2020 by Ashley // Leave a Comment

My half birthday is on Wednesday so I thought we were about due for an update on the books I was planning on reading this year.  I haven’t done as well with this as I was hoping to, but at least there are still another six months until my birthday to attempt to finish it all up.

1. Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: Kari made me read this! I’m really glad that I picked it up. I liked the twistiness of this story. I have a full review of this here.

2. American Royals by Katharine McGee

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: This book was so good! I had a lot of fun with the drama of it.  Again, Kari made me read it and I should just learn my lesson that I should automatically read things that Kari says are good.  I have a review of it here.

3. Sword and Dagger by Robert Cochran

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I really, really want to read this, but I keep getting distracted by other books that I buy for myself.  However, when I do finally read this book, you can definitely expect a review.

4. The Secret Commonwealth by Philip Pullman

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I’m a little bit nervous about this book because I heard some questionable things and also it’s a little bit large.  However, I am down for everything that is set in the world of His Dark Materials and I will definitely get to this book at some point.

5. The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: This book was really sweet. I liked getting to see Malec and hearing about their adventures. Magnus is one of my all time favourite characters. However, I didn’t like it as much as other Cassandra Clare books.

6. Ghosts of the Shadow Market by Cassandra Clare

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: I absolutely loved this collection.  It’s probably my favourite one yet.  I really liked the characters that were featured and I loved the standing recurrence of Jem throughout each of the stories.  It definitely helped hype me up to read Chain of Gold.

7. The Shadowglass by Rin Chupeco

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: I absolutely loved this book.  It was such a good conclusion to the series and I’m so pleased with how it came together.  This world was beautiful, and the characters are amazing.  This book made me teary and gave me all the feels.  I highly recommend this series if you haven’t already checked it out.

8. Queen of Nothing by Holly Black

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: I actually really enjoyed this one! I know that there are probably some people who might not like the ending, but I genuinely enjoyed the way this all came together. I liked the ending and I really loved the development of things between Jude and Cardan over the course of the series. If you haven’t delved into this one yet, you really need to!

9. On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: I loved this book.  It was a really interesting story, and I liked how it referenced events from Angie Thomas’s previous book.  I felt that Bri was a really interesting character and the story she had to tell was really intriguing.  I highly recommend this book!

10. How to Stop Time by Matt Haig

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I always find that I procrastinate on adult books, and while I find the premise of this book really interesting, realistically it might take me a little while to actually get to it.

11. Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I really don’t remember what this book is about but I really do want to get to it.  I’ve heard it’s creepy and that’s something that really intrigues me.  I want to read more creepy books.

12. Kingsbane by Claire Legrand

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I am very bad at getting to sequels, but I will get here eventually.  However, I might be tempted to wait until the third book comes out and then I can just binge read the rest of the series.  That might be fun.

13. Royal Diaries by Various Authors

Have I Read It? Somewhat

Thoughts: I have read some of the books from this series.  However, there are a lot of them so I probably won’t get to all of them before my next birthday.

 14. Extras by Scott Westerfeld

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I always forget that I have this book.  I definitely will try to get to it this year, but I have to admit that it’s lower on my list of priorities for this list.

15. Miss Mayhem by Rachel Hawkins

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: Miss Mayhem is the worst book in the series to be honest.  It took me forever to get into it and I needed an audiobook to actually finish it.  It felt like a hump book.  Once I got into it with the audiobook, I definitely had fun listening to it, but it just wasn’t nearly as good.  However, I’m definitely glad that I’ve finished the series now.

 16. Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I know this will be a disappointment to some people, but I heard that the final book is kind of disappointing, so I’m a little bit nervous to continue on in the series.

 17. Emergency Contact by Mary HK Choi

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I often am reluctant to read contemporary because I don’t really want to read about real life.  Usually books are for escaping.  However, I am looking forward to reading this at some point.

 18. Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: This book was an excellent palate cleanser read. I love the worlds that Seanan McGuire has built in this series. I also particularly liked revisiting Jack and Jill and seeing the school again.

 19. Heroine by Mindy McGinnis

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I really love Mindy McGinnis as a writer, and I really, really want to get to this book soon.  I will read it at some point.

 20. Foul is Fair by Hannah Capin

Have I Read It? Yes!

Thoughts: I loved this book absolutely and completely. It’s pretty much the perfect book for me. There’s a full review of this up on the blog; it can be found here.

 21. Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: This book is so big! It scares me.  However, I’m excited by the premise and will definitely be reading it sometime.

 22. The King of Crows by Libba Bray

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I was eagerly anticipating the conclusion to this series, and will admit that I still am.  However, I haven’t yet picked it up because I’m not quite ready for this series to end.

 23. Call Down the Hawk  by Maggie Stiefvater

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: I didn’t like this as much as the Raven Cycle. However, I did enjoy it and liked revisiting some of my favourite characters. I can’t wait until the next book comes out!

 24. The Beautiful by Renee Adhieh

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I’m still really excited about the premise of this story, but there are just so many good books out there friends.  It’s hard to find time to read them all.

 25. A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

Have I Read It?

Thoughts:

26. #MurderTrending by Gretchen McNeil

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: I think because of the premise of this book it’s more likely I’ll get to it in the fall when I read more thrillers and spooky books.

27. From Twinkle, With Love by Sandhya Menon

Have I Read It? No

Thoughts: Again, I tend to procrastinate on contemporaries.  However, I really want to get to this book at some point so I will try and get to it before my birthday.

28. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Have I Read It? Yes

Thoughts: I also really loved this book.  I was pretty sure that I would enjoy it, but I was surprised with how much I loved it.  I loved the dual timelines and learning about Evelyn’s past and the connection she had to the narrator.  There’s a lot of hype around this book, and I definitely think it lives up to it.

So that’s how I’ve done so far.  Hopefully I get to the rest before I turn 29 in December.  Have you read any of these books? Which should I prioritize and try to read next?
