One of my most anticipated reads this month, this year even, was Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater. The Raven Cycle is one of my favourite series and when I caught the first hint of the upcoming Dreamer Trilogy, I was super excited. I knew I had to read it and get my own copy.
I have been subscribed to Owl Crate for over a year now, and when I heard that they were doing a Call Down the Hawk book in combination with Maggie Stiefvater, I was super tempted. I didn’t know if I would get it, but then the librarian at my school brought it up to me and I let myself fall into temptation and bought it. From then on, it was a matter of waiting for the book to come out and the box to arrive.
I was super impressed with the box on so many levels. Firstly, it shipped super quickly. The box arrived on the day that the book came out and I was able to pick it up the next day. Secondly, I was super impressed with the quality of the box, and I thought it might be fun to do an unboxing post on this blog. I usually do an unboxing on my instagram story, but it might make good content!
Let’s break this into categories. We’ll start with wearables.
- Necklace – created by Team OwlCrate
This necklace is awesome. I’m not sure it’s something I’ll wear all the time because it’s a bit more edgy than my personal style. I like that it features Chainsaw, because Chainsaw is such a unique feature of the original series. The chain on this is actually really long, which is something that I really like.
- Pynch Socks – designed by Michelle Gray
These socks are nice as well! I like the classic pattern that they feature because it’s definitely the quintessential symbol of The Raven Cycle. They have a quote in Latin on the bottom of each of the socks, but as I haven’t read the new book yet, I’m not sure what it means.
- Dreamer Toque – designed by Michelle Gray
This toque is great. It’s super high quality and I really like the colours of it. I also like that it has a pom-pom on the top. Again, it might not be something I wear all the time, but it definitely suits my personal aesthetic of subtly nerdy items.
- Enamel Pin – designed by Iron and Ink Designs
The design of this pin is really cool. Again, it’s not something I totally understand yet because it’s a reference to the new book. However, I do really like the swords and the way the quote loops around.
Next, we have other bookish merch:
- Woodwick Candle – created by Rose & Adder
Again, the theme of this candle is a reference to the new book, but a candle is enjoyable even if you don’t really understand the reference. This candle smells really nice. It’s got a fruity blackberry scent that I really, really enjoyed. I can’t wait to burn this.
- Enamel Key Chain – designed by Brio and Brandish
The quality of this key chain is really nice. I like the design and I like the utility of a key chain. I don’t fully understand the reference yet but I’m definitely looking forward to finally understanding it.
- Matching Pillowcases – designed by Stella Bookish Art
I love that this box came with a matching set of pillowcases. Most boxes will just send you one and that’s not so great if you have a double bed or bigger and want your pillows to match. I also really love this quote and the design of the cases. I’m not sure it fully matches with the aesthetics of my bedroom and I might not use them any time soon, but I really like them.
Finally, the book:
For some reason when I got the box, I didn’t think it would be another OwlCrate exclusive. I really like the changes they made to the cover. Blue is one of my favourite colours and I like the way it looks with the title and the bird. I didn’t dislike the original cover, but it wasn’t as nice to me as The Raven Cycle colours, and I feel like this blue goes with those covers better.
The book also comes with some original Maggie Stiefvater art underneath the dust jacket. The art is beautiful and it’s such a lovely little secret hidden behind the cover. Maggie Stiefvater is super talented. It’s also very exciting to me that the book is signed by Maggie Stiefvater. She’s one of my favourite authors.
So that’s my unboxing of the Call Down the Hawk OwlCrate. It was one of the best themed boxes I have gotten this year, and I’m super glad I ordered it. I think my favourite items are the book itself and the candle. What do you think? Let me know in the comments down below.
