Everyone needs friends, and I am no exception.  It’s not a department that I’ve always been really rich in in my life, but right now I am lucky to have some wonderful friends.  They are beacons in my life, and I’m so glad to know them.  Another beacon in my life is books.  Books are something that have always been in my life, and it’s easy to draw parallels between them and the important friends someone has in their life.

BFF: Book you couldn’t live without

  • Harry Potter by JK Rowling: I recognize that this is a totally cliche answer, but I really love this series.  For me, I find it endlessly re-readable and I always like to revisit Hogwarts.  Every time I re-read the story it feels like coming home.  It’s a safe place and a warm and comforting presence.  All those things add up to a Book BFF for me.

The Emotional One: Book that made you cry

  • The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith: I read this book in my 24 hour readathon a while back, and I absolutely loved it.  It was an emotionally devastating read and it made me cry very, very hard.  I highly recommend it, but I would like to mention a trigger warning for rape.

The Smart One: Favourite non-fiction

  • The Massey Murders: A Maid, Her Master, and the Trial that Shocked a Nation by Charlotte Gray: I don’t really read a lot of non-fiction.  I prefer to escape reality in my reads, but this was an interesting one.  I like true crime stories and this was an interesting historical one.

The Funny One: Book that made you laugh

  • Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan: I want to clarify that I love everything I’ve read by Rick Riordan.  He is a fantastic writer.  His books make me laugh and then they hit me in the gut with serious underlying themes.  He walks a really lovely fine line between those two areas.  I love his books.

So those are some of my bookish friends! What would your answers be?
