Ashley’s July Wrap Up

07.31.2019 by Ashley // Leave a Comment

July was a crazy busy month for me! It was my first month of summer vacation and I had a bunch of stuff on the go: a garage sale, a wedding, camping, and helping my parents move! However, in between and around all those things I was able to get a bunch of reading done. I read 26 books in July. You can find my Wrap Up and brief reviews under the cut.

Ashley’s July Haul

07.30.2019 by Ashley // Leave a Comment

This was a month of bargains!  I found myself called by the siren that is Book Outlet!  I love this site so much because you can get some really good books for low prices.  I picked up a whole bunch of books from there, plus my Owl Crate, and most recently a trip to Indigo to pick up some sequels. You can find my haul under the cut.

I’m Not Dying With You Tonight by Gilly Segal and Kimberly Jones is a hard hitting YA Contemporary novel that hits the shelves on August 6th, 2019. I gave it 4/5 stars on GoodReads, but my actual rating is probably a 4.5/5.

Tag Tuesday | Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

07.16.2019 by Ashley // Leave a Comment

IMG_8880

I can’t believe the year is over halfway over already.  Time seems to fly so much faster as you get older, and I’m not really sure how that works.  It doesn’t seem particularly fair to me.  However, I thought it would be fun to do this book tag.  I’ve seen it circulating on BookTube, and I thought I would maybe do it, but I cemented that idea when I saw people on bookstagram doing it.  So below the cut you will find my answers to the Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag.

IMG_5964

Summer vacation is here! I love teaching, but by the time June rolls around, I’m always really ready for summer and spending some time relaxing and perhaps going on vacation.  I’m hoping for a nice mix of work and play this summer as I prep for the next school year and hopefully also catch up on my sleep and the books I’ve been putting off.  So in honour of summer vacation, let’s talk about my top five bookish vacations!

Writing Wednesday | A New Beginning

07.10.2019 by Ashley // Leave a Comment

A few years ago, I started a 52 week writing challenge.  I fell out of it after a few weeks but I really liked the stories I wrote for it and I wanted to share them here on the blog.  I also thought it might be fun to continue on with the challenge here even though it’s a weird time of the year to continue a 52 week reading challenge.

The first prompt was for the first week of January and the prompt was ‘A New Beginning.”  You will find the story below the cut.

Everyone needs friends, and I am no exception.  It’s not a department that I’ve always been really rich in in my life, but right now I am lucky to have some wonderful friends.  They are beacons in my life, and I’m so glad to know them.  Another beacon in my life is books.  Books are something that have always been in my life, and it’s easy to draw parallels between them and the important friends someone has in their life.

.
.
A: I feel like lately I’ve been really preoccupied with the number of books that I read per year as opposed to reading the long books that pile up on my shelves. I get scared by how big the book is and how it’s a much bigger time commitment. However, I often find that when I finally commit myself to the big book I end up loving it.

A: I find it’s hard to fully answer this question even though I am the one who is asking the question. However, I find that sometimes the perfect book for me will hit me in my nostalgia for books that I read as a kid or in my interests from when I was little.
.

I found out about this book, Daughters of a Dead Empire, through #booktok and it was an instant buy for me when I figured out the plot. I loved the premise of what if Anastasia Romanov survived the execution of her family and how that might have played out. I loved this story! The dual points of view were really well done and I loved the story arc. It was well written and I highly recommend it.

Hi friends! ♡ What’s your favorite Greek myth Hi friends! ♡

What’s your favorite Greek mythology tale?
———
Welcome to my stop in the Bookstagram & Creative Tour for Zeus by @carlyspade, book 6 in the Contemporary Mythos series! Zeus/Zane, King of the Greek gods, holds the world in his palm in both his mortal and godly form… until Hera leaves him, forcing him to uphold Gaea’s clause: There must always be a Queen, or he loses his title and part of his power along with it. Time is short. Too bad the one woman he has his sights on wants nothing to do with him...or does she? Zeus is out now & can be read as a standalone!

I loved this book so so much! It was extremely fun and a really engaging read. I read it within a day. Zeus and Keira’s chemistry was electrifying (both literally AND figuratively) and I loved seeing the growth between them both.

While Zeus is not depicted as the best of gods (because let’s face it, he really isn’t), I super loved him in this book and couldn’t help but root for him in the end. Carly Spade, I’m not sure if I should love or hate you for that 😂 All joking aside, if you’re looking for a passionate and fun read, this is definitely it! I gave it 5 stars!
