October is not the traditional month to go crazy when buying things, but it is a month where I start to get more into the swing of the school year. Things get super busy and hectic and I get more stressed. In order to combat that stress, I tend to want to treat myself. I know that’s not sure healthy, but it did help make me feel a little better. That being said, I picked up a few cool books this month. You’ll find them below the cut!
Book Review | The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell
**Disclaimer: I received an advanced reader’s copy of The Family Upstairs from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell is an adult mystery thriller set in London. It is about a young woman named Libby who comes into an unexpected inheritance and an unexpected family history. The book is set to be published on November 5th. I gave it five stars on Goodreads.
Writing Wednesday | Falling Lies
So, I have loved to write for a long time. I haven’t always been the most consistent with it, and sometimes I am super terrible about following through with things that I started. I used to be better and worse at the follow through.
As I was thinking about posts for the blog, I was thinking about Writing Wednesdays that I wanted to do, and I found myself struck by nostalgia. I wanted to look at some of my old writing and I found a story I had written when I was in my final year of high school. After re-reading, I thought it might be fun to share it with you all. It’s called Falling Lies and you will find it below the cut.
Tag Tuesday | This or That
One of the things I know about people is that they tend to be pretty opinionated. I am definitely that realm sometimes, but I have to admit that I have some serious moments of indecisiveness. Because of my indecisiveness and the fact that I read Hamlet recently with my class, I thought it might be fun to make myself do a tag where I have to make some decisions.
Tag Tuesday | #booksanddisneyvillains
Disney was such a formative thing for me as a kid. I used to watch the movies all the time, and my mom tells me that my favourite when I was really little was 101 Dalmatians. I’d ask her over and over to watch ‘Dogs’. However, I was never super into the villains. When I got older, I got a bit more of an understanding of the character and when I watch the movies now, I understand the depth of their characterization. I’m still not much of a villain lover today, but they’re really interesting.
Film Friday | Ashley’s Horror Movie Recommendations
I can’t say that I love horror movies, but I have to admit that I really do enjoy them. They can totally be hit or miss because some of them are really, really bad, but some of them are so impressively well done. As we move into October, I am planning on watching some spooky films and I figured it might be fun to recommend some of my favourites for you to add to your films to watch.
Top 5 Thursday | Things I am Thankful For
Thanksgiving has rolled around in Canada and I thought it might be a good time to talk about some things that I’m thankful for.
Misc Monday | Anticipated October Releases
The problem with being a book lover and a voracious reader is that even though you read a lot, there are always so many new and wonderful books coming out. I have so many authors that I love and want to support, and there are so many books coming out from authors that I have never read that I’m definitely interested in.
Book Review | Love, Heather by Laurie Petrou
**Disclaimer: I received a free early access copy of Love, Heather from Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for review purposes. Thank you to them for this opportunity.
Love, Heather by Laurie Petrou is a YA contemporary, with some mystery/thriller aspects, that draws inspiration from classic 80s revenge flicks. It is set in Canada and primarily revolves around a girl named Stevie who is a freshman in high school and struggling with certain social dynamics. I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads. It publishes on October 8th.
Film Friday | Ashley’s October Movie Plans
I am so into the Halloween and spooky vibes thing. I am really looking forward to all the things that come with October like candy, decorations, costumes, and spooky movies. Every year I always make plans to watch some scary movies, and I don’t always follow through.
