I read We Were Liars at the beginning of this year. I forgot exactly when Ashley recommended it to me, but it was long enough for me to have had it on my TBR, finally buy a copy, and then have it sit there for a little while longer.
Due of the nature of this book, it’s going to be a short and vague review. I do apologize in advance.
First off, do not look anything up before reading this book. If you’re reading this review, please stop right now! It’s not like it’s going to give anything away, but just stay away and come back once you’re done reading.
The writing of this story was beautiful. There’s a lot of metaphors that I’m sure went over my head when reading (so I’ll have to reread sometime), but the prose was beautiful. A lot of symbolism as well. I love tales about the more privileged population. A guilty pleasure, I suppose.
There’s a certain time in the story where everything comes together and it was pretty obvious, but also written in a way where it totally wasn’t. Once it happened, I literally lost it. I was bawling (and I know a book is good when it makes me do that). I even sent Ashley a text saying something along the lines of I finished it and I hated her or something. I’m not sure what exactly the emotion was? I felt right along with the main character which was horror and sadness and relief.
This was my first book by E. Lockhart. I’m definitely going to give her other stuff a try! I gave it 5 stars.
