Ashley’s Worst of 2018

01.29.2019 by Ashley // Leave a Comment

Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

I really enjoy To Kill a Mockingbird, and I know there are some issues with it and that it’s by no means perfect, but I really do enjoy this novel.  I think it’s an important read, but to keep your critical thinking hat on as you do. So, after teaching it for the first time, I decided to read Go Set a Watchman, and boy oh boy, I did not enjoy it.  I know it’s not truly a sequel and that certain parts of it are word for word from TKAM, but I really, really didn’t like the plot of Go Set a Watchman. I didn’t like the choices that were made with certain characters, and I just genuinely think it was a poor choice to publish it.  (Again, I know there was some controversy when it came to publishing it at all.)

Avalon High Graphic Novels

I loved Avalon High by Meg Cabot.  It was one of my favourite books when I was younger, and I was  so sad when they made a movie because it was terrible. My hopes weren’t high for the graphic novel sequel, and I was right, they were not good.  I didn’t like them at all. I seriously do not recommend them.

Confessions of a Murder Suspect

I will admit to not remembering a whole lot about this book, but I remember distinctly not enjoying the twists it made.  I liked the idea, but I didn’t like the ending. I was glad none of the kids were the ones who murdered their parents, but I didn’t like that they took themselves out with no message left behind.

The Shack

I kind of went into this one knowing that I wasn’t going to enjoy it, and I was right, I really didn’t enjoy it.  This story was just what it was advertised, but I had kind of hoped it wouldn’t be. This one is really on me, and I fully admit that.  I shouldn’t have picked it up, but I was just a little bit intrigued. I listened to it on audiobook though, so it wasn’t too much of a commitment.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle

I had no idea what to expect when I picked up this one on audiobook.  It was the first thing I ever read by Shirley Jackson and it was very, very weird.  The plot was intriguing, but it was just very low on my list and I didn’t have a lot of enjoyment with how it played out.  It’s worth giving a shot but it just wasn’t for me.
